“What’s your favorite lunch at school?” is a common question that Archmere students receive from their parents. Then, they often tell Auks about their lunch at school growing up, and always have some sort of story about why it was so distasteful. However, many Auks would preach that they have had a different experience.
So, why do many people favor Archmere lunches over others? A popular feature is that Archmere offers many options on the same day, but a different theme the next. For example, on a recent Monday, Auks could choose from a grilled cheese sandwich, an acai bowl, a customized salad, tomato-basil soup, pesto pasta salad, a spicy cucumber poke salad bowl, broccoli salad, vegetable sushi, Teriyaki Tori Nuku, spaghetti and meatballs, a Chipotle house-roasted beef sandwich, or egg rolls for lunch. All of these options bring together multiple cultures and options for people who think that they “know what they like.”
Specials, such as a sandwich bar or milkshakes, encourage students to try new foods. When asked how their favorites have changed over the years, Ethan Flores ‘26 said, “My favorite food when I first came to Archmere was the s’mores cookies because of the chocolate and marshmallow.” Now that he’s a senior, Ethan says, “My favorite thing here will always be the panini press station. It’s the best addition to Archmere’s food. It’s so good because the bread is toasty and I can try my friends’ choices.”
The desserts at Archmere are limitless. Every time you walk through the end of the lunch line to pay, there is always something new to try. This writer’s personal favorite is the homemade Oreo Rice Krispies treats. However, 79.8% of Auks agree that the cookies are the best.
Although Archmere’s lunches are delicious, the cost can add up — prompting many students to bring lunch from home. Tsion Mideska ‘26 said “I think it can be a little overpriced, although I do enjoy the taco bar. Overall I feel for the quality of the food, I am paying too much.” In addition, bringing food from home allows students with allergies greater flexibility based on their specific restrictions, even though Archmere provides food that accommodates many allergy requirements. It also might encourage Auks to cook and try something new themselves.
The whiteboard in the SLC is always taking new suggestions. Angela Zhang ‘26 says, “I think Mexican food and sushi would be great additions to Archmere.” Head over during lunch or a free period to add your ideas for the kitchen staff.
