This week marks the end of scrimmages and the beginning of real games for Archmere’s fall sports teams. Every team is playing its first game of the season this week. After a long period of training and preparing, we will finally see our Auks in action!
Starting off the official fall season, girls field hockey played against Syrmna on Wednesday. This was a tough match since Syrmna won the D1 state championship last year and is one of the best high school field hockey teams in the state. Even though they lost 3-0, the Auks put up a good fight and were able to hold off the opponent with 3 defensive saves, and 17 saves overall. Also, Friday the team will be playing its second game of the year against Wilmington Friends at home. Bella Hughes states that the team is “so excited to get out on the field for the first time this season and give it our all! With our strong defense I think we definitely have a chance to win both games.”
Just like field hockey, the volleyball team played their first game of the year against Smyrna. It was a tough match since Smyrna has a great Volleyball team. Even though the Auks lost 1-3 the girls put in a great effort against a tough team! The student section was incredible and there were lots of impressive red, white, and blue outfits for the USA theme. The support was amazing and hopefully it will be matched at the next home game!
Finally, the boys soccer team has its first game Thursday at home versus Caravel Academy. After defeating St. George Tech in a scrimmage Tuesday, spirits are high for their first game of the season.
While some of us will be spending all of our Saturday getting ready for Archmere’s annual MORP, our cross country and football athletes will be busy competing in their first events of the season. Both the girls and boys cross country teams will be running at Unionville against about ten other high school teams. That competition will not deter the runners as they focus on getting back in the swing of racing.
Football kicks off the season with a home game against St. Elizabeth’s this Saturday at 11 AM. A great way to show school spirit is to come to the Football game, then attend Morp Saturday night. A fun day of school pep and excitement is in store for this Saturday!
